Department of Citizenship and Immigration Services

While many immigrants and refugees would like to become American citizens and participate fully in American life, they are often met with hurdles to overcome. Lower levels of English ability and lower levels of education make learning the skills necessary for citizenship difficult. Unskilled workers who make lower incomes spend more time working to support their families and often times have little time to improve their personal skills.

CMAA helps seniors and individuals with low English proficiency and others with challenges attain citizenship. CMAA's Citizenship Department registered 92 of its students to become registered voters. The Citizenship Department stresses that becoming a U.S. citizen is only the first step of a process to become informed voters and active community members. The Citizenship Department is comprised of two components:

Citizenship Education

The Citizenship Department has helped over 235 students prepare for their Immigration and Naturalization Service Citizenship exams by providing classroom instruction and individual tutoring in United States history and civics.

Citizenship Case Assistance

CMAA offered individual case assistance to over 529 clients and helped over 250 individuals in their completion of citizenship applications.
