Family Literacy Assistant

JOB DESCRIPTION

Work to Be Done:

Family Literacy is a partnership with the CMAA Youth Department and the Bezazian Branch of the Chicago Public Library. The program brings parents and children (age 4-11) together for educational activities and field trips, library orientations and workshops, and parenting classes. This program allows parents and children to learn English together with activities geared toward each age group.

Examples of Activities:

• Tutoring and assisting children with their homework;
• Reading aloud with children;
• Chaperoning fieldtrips;
• Assisting with other activities, as planned by the Family Literacy Coordinator.

Key Personal Attributes Required:

Friendly, flexible, productive team player interested in relating to culturally diverse immigrants, refugees and communities.

Qualifications Sought:

1. Experience and/or aptitude for working with children/youth/parents desirable;
2. Ability to speak Cantonese, Mandarin, or Vietnamese preferred, but not required;
3. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills desirable.

Chinese Mutual Aid Association, 1016 W Argyle St, Chicago, IL 60640.

How often:

Once or twice weekly during the school year. A summer program is also available with additional opportunities for involvement if desired.

How many hours per week:

2 hours minimum; more is available if desired.

Length of minimum commitment sought:

8 weeks

Dates/hours preferred:

Flexible to availability of volunteer during summer months. Specific dates and times needed during school year: Wednesday (5-7:00 p.m.) and Saturday (9:30-2:00 p.m.)
