The mission of the Family Literacy Club is to build a bridge between the immigrant families and help them to merge into the mainstream of American society. The children from the Literacy Club dreamed of having a fun-filled day during the Spring Break, even though their parents still had to work their long, odd hours. Not a promising start for a Spring vacation.
On Saturday, April 11, an exclusive egg hunt for the members of the Literacy Club took place before the Children’s Reading Room opened to the public. On top of the shelves, the space between the books, and the obvious spots were all great places to search. What pleasures they experienced when they could keep the treasures they found.
Egg dying was another highlight. The children displayed their hidden talents by using the pastel colors, primary colors, and combined compelling colors on their eggs. April is the month of poetry. We used our childlike enthusiasm to act out The Green Grass Grew All Around”: An American Folksong chosen by Karen Harvey-Turner, the Children’s Librarian. Three children won guessed the number of jelly beans in three different sizes of jars and the winners kept the jelly beans.
After sharing a celebratory cake, each child picked out a book and took it home. Our joyful memories will be cherished for a long time. The program is funded by the Illinois Secretary of State, the McCormick Tribune Foundation and the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago. Families can sign up for the program by contacting Connie Chang at 773-784-2900 or ConnieC@chinesemutualaid.org.
