On May 10th, Chinese Mutual Aid Association proudly hosted the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at its facility in the lower level. A few musicians from the Orchestra played a medley of songs for the children who attended.
About 60 children took part in this festivity and got to listen to and hum along with the songs that were played. Many of the children sat in amazement as the musicians played. The event lasted for about an hour and a half.

On August 8, 48 people—children, parents and volunteers—attended a field trip to the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park to hear popular children’s entertainer Ella Jenkins. Ms. Jenkins has performed internationally for over 40 years and appears at Ravinia nearly every year. After the performance in Ravinia’s historic Martin Theater, CMAA hosted a picnic on Ravinia’s grassy lawn.
On April 25, 2009, CMAA's Family Literacy Program hosted one Michael Taylor, a musician from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Michael brought with him twelve drums in order to provide approximately forty children with the opportunity to gain some hands-on experience as drummers. Each drum was a different shape and so made a different sounds and beats as the children hit them.
CMAAs 2009 Summer Literacy Program, known as “Read, Learn, Go!”, began last Friday, June 19th, and will continue until Saturday, August 22nd. This program meets on Fridays and Saturdays every week and features activities such as reading, writing, craft making, and field trips to local museums, parks, and libraries for parents and their children. The program accepts children from 1st through 6th grade.

A rainy Friday on June 19, 2009 marked the first day of CMAAs Summer Family Literacy Program, called “Read, Learn, Go!”. Connie Chang, the Family Literacy Coordinator, brightened the rather wet morning with free breakfast for the children, from 6 to 12 years of age. As the children settled, Connie introduced the four youth volunteers helping out through the duration of the program, which runs until August 22.
