Chris Detrych
Community Leader
Korean Adoptees of Chicago (KAtCH)
Chris lives in Chicago’s Irving Park neighborhood but originally hails from Metro Detroit by way of Korea. While studying at the University of Michigan (go Blue!), he launched an adoptee student group—but after graduation, he stepped away from adoptee circles for about a decade. Eventually, the pull of community brought him back, and he’s been a key part of Korean Adoptees of Chicago (KAtCH) ever since, including six years leading the organization. He also lends his voice to the global adoptee community through the International Korean Adoptee Associations (IKAA).
Through these connections, Chris has reconnected with his Korean heritage and found a sense of home he never expected.
Outside of community work, you’ll find Chris pedaling around the city, getting lost in instrumental playlists, or cheering on the latest Asian films and shows. By day, he codes away as a software engineer at Oracle.
