As we welcome the Year of the Dragon, Chinese Mutual Aid Association is proud to release a limited edition t-shirt celebrating the Lunar New Year, crafted in collaboration with acclaimed local artist Louis Wu. Wu’s design casts a majestic dragon soaring over Uptown’s iconic Aragon Ballroom, paying tribute to the spirit of Uptown, the historic “Asia on Argyle” corridor, and Chinese Mutual Aid Association’s long standing commitment to the community.
More than forty years ago, CMAA’s founders arrived in Chicago as refugees after fleeing the wars in Southeast Asia. They established Chinese Mutual Aid Association in 1981 to provide the culturally responsive and comprehensive social services they knew from first-hand experience would be critical for future generations of immigrants and refugees–from all world regions–to thrive. This t-shirt is not just a symbol, but a celebration of that vision.
Since 2009, Louis Wu has been a proud resident of the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago, a historic and diverse community deserving of recognition and care. Wu's clientele includes Jenny’s Tofu and Chiu Quon Bakery, both immigrant-owned small businesses in the Uptown area. Wu consistently seeks avenues to represent Chicago’s AAPI community, drawing from his personal immigrant journey and the community connections he has built over the years. In 2022, Wu was honored as the featured artist for the Chicago Bulls' Lunar New Year game. CMAA is honored to work in partnership with Wu and share his design with the community.
All proceeds go directly towards supporting the Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA), a 501(c)3 social service agency. Your purchase helps provide vital support to Chicagoland’s immigrant and refugee communities.
