James joined CMAA in early 2022, bringing his diverse programmatic and leadership experience to integrate the organization’s efforts to provide clients with transformative education, employment, and citizenship pathways.
A former attorney (White & Case), James has nearly two decades of successful experience leading nonprofit, education, and workforce development start-ups and turnarounds for such organizations as the AIDS Care Project, Newport Academy, and the Cristo Rey Network of schools. He served five years as Fordham University’s Director of Faculty Development, and has been a curriculum consultant to the Asia Society and National Endowment for the Humanities. He constantly calls upon lessons learned from his clients, students, and their families during direct teaching and other services he’s been privileged to provide through those organizations’ disruptively innovative environments. He lives with his wife, Prima, who immigrated to the US with her family from East Java as a teenager, and his son, Marvin, who is Filipino. James speaks Bahasa Indonesia.
FUN FACT | James was on one of David Bowie’s vacation videos in Indonesia, a fact definitely more memorable to James than Mr. Bowie, although he was both amusing and gracious (Mr. Bowie, that is, not James).
