JOY PAK
ESL Coordinator of Elgin
JD, John Marshall Law School, Chicago
BS, Political Science, Northern Illinois University, DeKalb
As ESL Program Coordinator, she is responsible for all aspects related to adult education in Elgin: registration, assessment, coordination of ESL classes, teaching ESL classes, mentoring ESL Instructors, community and partner outreach, and social media. Joy’s first job experience with immigrant rights was when she taught citizenship classes during law school. Ever since then, she has been an advocate for immigrant rights.
She grew up in an immigrant family and knows firsthand about immigrant issues. After she graduated college, she was a volunteer to tutor English with Chicago Literacy. She realized that her passion wasn’t for law but with Adult Education, especially if English is their second language. She later taught ESL at Triton College and YWCA Elgin. She has presented at state and national adult education conferences on digital literacy and instruction.
FUN FACT | Joy loves all those Hollywood musicals, such as Singin’ in the Rain and La La Land, even though she sings off key and has no rhythm.
